The end of the semester is approaching at break-neck speed, and that always seems to come with exhaustive hours of writing final papers and studying for final exams. However, there is something to look forward to; the Red Weather literary magazine’s 36th issue is being released May 1st, and I couldn’t be more excited. Working on the magazine has been a whirlwind of activity, but the overall result is completely worth all the work that was put in. There is not a single piece of prose, poetry, or artwork that is being featured in this edition that our team is not passionate about.
The day of May 1st will be filled with plenty of exciting activities. The event starts at 7 PM and goes until 8:30 PM at the MSUM Comstock Memorial Union (CMU) in the Ballroom. Copies of this year’s Red Weather will also be raffled off throughout the night. There will be a blackout poetry activity taking place at every table. Food and beverages will be provided for those who attend, and I’m more than thrilled about the food choices we’re providing. A cupcake buffet sounds like heaven, so that’s what we’re bringing to the table. There will be Red Velvet cupcakes with assorted frostings for you to choose from, so whatever your taste is, we’ll have it. (But you can’t just come for the food).
The Red Weather team is also excited that our guest speaker will be Melanie M. Hoffert, author of Prairie Silence and a native of North Dakota. She’ll be hosting the night of the event, so make sure to stop by and take advantage of the opportunity to hear her speak. In addition to Melanie, there will be participation from this year’s Red Weather contributors, including readings, viewings, and explanations of their creative processes.
If you find yourself with nothing to do Monday, May 1st and want to enrich your night with some engaging texts and beautiful artwork, I highly encourage you to stop by the Ballroom and be a part of this year’s Red Weather launch. It’ll be one for the books.
